History of
Project
In 2000, the District of Columbia launched the
Anacostia Waterfront Initiative, which brought
together more than 20 different Federal and District
agencies that hold land or jurisdiction along the
Anacostia River. Over the next three years, the
District engaged residents to outline a shared
vision for revitalizing the river and its
waterfront. This comprehensive vision outline in the
Anacostia Waterfront Framework
Plan
was approved by the D.C. Council in 2003 and is
administered by the Anacostia Waterfront Corporation
(AWC).
On March 1, 2006, AWC issued a Request for
Expressions of Interest (“RFEI”) for the
redevelopment of 23 acres of publicly owned land
and adjacent riparian areas along the Southwest Waterfront. The RFEI was an
open invitation for development concepts from
qualified local, national, and international
developers with experience in large-scale,
mixed-use, retail, residential and public/private
development.
AWC announced in May that they had received
17 responses to the RFEI. AWC's CEO was "thrilled that
this major development opportunity has attracted the
interest of so many first-class developers from
across the country." After narrowing the field down
to 5, AWC selected Hoffman-Struever team as the master developer for the
Southwest Waterfront.
When complete, this site will include a
unique blend of retail, residential, office,
maritime, hotel, park and cultural space that create
a vibrant, amenity-rich 24-hour neighborhood for
both District residents and visitors.
Project Development Schedule
HSW currently assumes that construction will
commence in 2010 and be completed
in 2017.
